Private Space Industry Works to Replace Shuttle →
From MIT’s Technology Review:
NASA has released the first edition of its new bi-monthy newsletter that focuses on “happenings” in the agency’s commercial spaceflight development program. The first newsletter is devoted to the progress made in the commercial crew development program, which recently awarded four companies money to develop spacecraft that can carry astronauts to space. The progress made by these companies—SpaceX, Boeing, Blue Origin, and Sierra Nevada Corporation—is small. But with the space shuttle’s final mission scheduled for July 8, the pressure is on for these companies to work quickly and efficiently to meet their goals.

Post-launch view of the pad. Note the shadow of the shuttle’s exhaust trail from above the cloud deck.
PermalinkAmazing idea to split screen a video of the launch with reaction to it from one of the other participants, Tricia McKinney, who is a producer on the Rachel Maddow show. I was standing a few feet away from the videographer, @shell7 and behaved exactly like Tricia in the video.

#NASATweetup#Endeavour#STS-134 Posted on May 16, 2011 at 7:33AM 2 notesAfter a 2 week delay, waiting, nailbiting, fretting and a last minute tile repair, Endeavour is safely in orbit for its mission to the ISS.
Everyone said it would be bright and loud, and it WAS. The light reflected off the plume of smoke below as she slowly climbed up to the clouds. Such a sight to behold.
Just breathtaking. So thankful and grateful that I got to experience this in person. Worth every hassle and stumbling block along the way.
Godspeed, Endeavor, and wishing you a successful mission and safe return home!
